Benefits of Bamboo

Here's a short article I ran across today listing the pros and cons of using bamboo as a renewable resource for everything from building material to flooring. Note that all of the cons are rectifyable - making bamboo a resource to invest in (wisely) for our future!

The Buzz on Bamboo

Bamboo also has wonderful applications for wearable clothing. I've been reading about bamboo clothing for months, and almost got everybody some for Christmas! I've felt it in the store and it is super soft. It's machine washable (hang dry) and biodegradable - so if that old shirt is too worn out to donate to Goodwill, and you've got enough cotton rags, throw it on the compost heap. This website talks about choosing bamboo and how it is processed for clothing. The article doesn't go into as much detail as I would like in describing how the pulp is made and processed, but even if they do use something as harsh as Clorox to bleach the fibers, well, Clorox can be pretty easily diluted to a level that's safe to dump, so I'm not too concerned.

Bamboo Fabric Information
If you're ever stumped for something to get me (or my future children)... ShirtsofBamboo.com is also a good site!
