My New Blog is on teh Interwebs

Friends, just a quick note to let you know that my new blog is up:

...Because We're All at the Center of Infinity

Yeah, Doug Williams doesn't
belong on this blog. Unless he's a
whole foods advocate or something!
It's not quite ready for prime time, but I was inspired to write about the Super Bowl, and well, who's gonna care about that a week from now? So I threw it up there, fodder for the wolves, but so it is. *sigh!*

"Center of Infinity" will not at all be replacing this blog. In fact, often the posts on the two blogs will complement each other. However, this blog will retain my core metaphysical, waaaaay too introspective writings, plus food or recipes, health, nutrition, exercise -- anything related to whole-body-wellness. I've already got several up-and-coming posts for this page in the works. I even carry a little book around in my purse now, just for jotting notes. Yes, me hearties, hoist the main sail and curse like a pirate! There is some serious writing ahead!

...My daughter is 2 1/2. The writing drought is over. Hurray!!!

ch- ch- ch- ch- Changes!!!

Times... they are a-changin'. And believe it or not, I will soon be utilizing this blog both more often... and more smartly.

You see, I love to write. More importantly, I love to write about myself. ("Narcissist much?" Yes.) Back before I had kids and had a bit more time on my hands, my current conglomeration of blogs and socially networked memberships worked well for me. I organized my blogs, Twitter and Facebook to kinda, sorta work in conjunction, for my own benefit and that of those who wanted to keep up with some aspects of my life, but not others. And it worked.... kinda.

Today I begin to restructure my personal "brand", as it were, here on the Interwebs. Changes, they are a-comin' - changes that may effect this particular url. Currently, I plan to keep this blog (I love WholePup! I am WholePup!) but to shrink the categories of topics I post about here. I will continue to occasionally post about food, diet revolution and recipes in this space. All things health and well-being will go here, but there will be fewer personal stories to go with them. I have a new, bigger and better space for that coming.

In the meantime... I have a TON of bottled up blog posts about eating gluten-free and naturally and Community Supported Agriculture and emotional healing bottled up within me. And I will unpop that cork for you as soon as I have a spiffy new label on the bottle... very soon.

PS. If you see plenty of blank space around this post... yes I know, it's part of the process of change, images will fill those blanks soon enough. =)

Silence in the Library

pic stolen from
www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk
I've been very quiet in this space for much of this summertime. It has not been for lack of something to say.

Rather, my gears have been working hard, I've been changing, shifting, seeing what feels new and what's old and has to go. My thoughts and feeling have either been too fluid to blog about, or too unfinished in their machinations. I'm still very much unfinished with this round of emotional/spiritual movement.

So like any good Library-goer, I've kept quietly to myself, while my head is fully delved into the mental matters at hand. Or not at hand -- I'm not actually holding any book. I'm just sitting, thinking, dreaming, planning, wondering, deciding, choosing.

...We've also been watching quite a lot of Doctor Who this summer, so "Silence in the Library" is on the tip of my brain. LOVE that episode. ;)

More to come soon. I'm starting to come out the other side of my summer's reverie. I can feel the shifting winds of Fall, the approaching energy of change. I've always loved the Fall!

More To Come...

I have many thoughts and issues to post about in coming days, I just haven't had time to sit and stream-of-conscious-write them out. But I will, I will. =)

Return of Pup and Wholeness

Disclaimer: As I type this, I am ever so slightly inebriated on a single shot of Virginia Gentlement (sipped slowly) and watching the White House Correspondents Dinner. But I committed to updating this blog before I knew the dinner was on... but now I know it's on, I have to watch it. ;)

As you may have guessed, for the past 3 months, I've guzzled sugar like there's no tommorrow. But I'm through with that now. Done. Through. Sowed my wild sugar-eating oats for the last time. DONE.

Yes, I'm sure!

No really, I'm done.

There are no longer any reasons for me to eat sugar. None at all. I was dealing with a lot of stress and the sugar definitely helped me, in that I needed to let the shoe drop in some area of my life. That one, I could control the damage done.

But I didn't really have control. Because despite all I've read, watched, been told, been taught, and studied, I could still find holes in the arguments against sugar that I could use to justify eating it. I could *still* find a way.

Fortunately, thanks to Dr. Lustig at UC Berkeley, that hole is closed forever! His lecture Sugar: The Bitter Truth has definitively filled in all the blanks and taught me that sugar is, in fact, a poison in the same sense that alcohol is a poison, that heroine is a poison, that formaldahyde is a poison. More importantly, as a celiac: Sugar is a poison in my system as gluten is a poison. Sugar and gluten are both poisons!!!!

Giving up gluten was relatively easy for me. Finally knowing what caused the IBS, the pains, my hernia, and multiple other symptoms made it unpalatable. Admittedly, I do well love the taste of a good slice of freshly baked bread. But given the memory of my bodily torments, I have zero desire to eat one. The thought of the gas and the pain makes the choice to not eat it a no-brainer.

Sugar now occupies the same status in my brain: Given the choice, leaving it on the table is a No-Brainer. Sugar quite literally makes my arteries harden the way meat carmelizes on the grill, why would I want to eat that?! Ew! Ugh! Get it away!

One-hundred and fifty calories of sugar, as it come in a single can of soda, has the same effect on my body as 150 calories of beer (as Dr. Lustig puts it-> ) "without the buzz" -- the same amount of fat metabolizes from soda as beer. Beer-gut is now Soda-gut. I know better than to drink beer everyday, why would I drink soda? Gross!!!

So sugar *might* make me diabetic. It *might* give me hormonal mood swings. But is *is* poison. Yeah yeah I know one of you that's probably going to start debating the pros and cons of fructose v. glucose. To that I say: Read Connie Bennett, Perricone, Clower, Enig, Fallon, Schwartzbein and yes, even Suzanne Somers. They take different roads to get there yet all arrive at the same conclusions. All sugars, including those metabolized from processed foods/flours, are far more negative for the body than good. In fact, one can cut out all refined carbs and continue to get their complete nutrition. The vast majority of the human race had no access to refined carbs prior to WWII.

So yeah, back to my point: No more sugar for me!

Whole Foods Recipe Updates to Come!

I've enjoyed LOTS of amazing gluten-free, sugar-free, affordably homecooked meals this past week. I even took pictures. I will post about them soon enough! In the meantime, absolve me of my sugar sins by reading the post below. ;)

I AM BACK!!

After more than a year of silence, in which MUCH occured to take me away from this blog, I'm back! Quite a bit has changed: I'm now a Mom! And much has remained the same: I am still gluten-free and a whole-foodie.

During my pregnancy however, as my super-awesome metabolism let me eat pretty much anything I wanted, I slowly slipped back into processed and sugared foods. After the baby was born, I developed a severe case of post-pardem depression (which I continue to battle now.) To cope, it was either eat or become a horrible raging lunatic. I am still prone to the ravages of PPD, but food (and coffee) has helped me cope with the crazy changes to my mood and emotions.

Now I find myself TOTALLY addicted to sugar, having gained many pounds in a brief period of time. It is time for that to end! As I type this, I am consuming my very last white russian for a long long time. As of midnight tonight, I am cutting sugar completely out of my diet.

I am eliminating:
  • White sugar, "raw" sugar, brown sugar, turbinado, succanat etc.
  • Artificial sweetners, especially my beloved Splenda
  • Honey, molasses, syrups of all kinds
  • Processed foods such as rice crakers, rice cereal, etc.
  • white rice in any form.
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet definitely changed my life. But it's too hard given my current lifestyle to continue longterm. I am therefore creating a new hybrid-diet just for me and my family, that takes the best from all my favorite diet philosophies. I'm incorporating knowledge (and recipes!) learned from Sally Fallon, Suzanne Somers, Dr. Perricone, Dr. Swartzbein, Myra Kornfeld, Elaine Gottschall, IIN and others, plus goodies gleaned from the Better Homes Cookbook, Joy of Cooking and others.

I am using the network at SUGAR SHOCK! for support. I befriended Connie Bennett on facebook some time ago, due to our mutual interest in IIN. I've enjoyed her Blog Talk Radio show on and off. Finally, I got a copy of her book. And I'm using it to inspire me to complete my healthy renewal once and for all!

So hurrah, many posts from me to come. Namely, I plan to track my progress at eliminating sugar, and to report on the recipes I find and try - whether they are worth adding to regular rotation or not.

New to this Blog: SCD Recipe Reviews

In addition to blogging about health and wellness, I'll also be reporting on the occasional new recipe successes and failures. This is to help me keep track of what works (in my oven and in my tummy), as well as to help introduce you, Dear Reader, to what this "SCD thing" is all about.

Most people probably freak out when they read how the diet works!! However, I have not yet felt deprived with this way of eating -- it's so healthy and tasty that I hardly notice. Plus, it's given me the energy I never had to put toward a lot of home cooking! I love the flour-less pancakes and muffins and coffee cakes, I love my homemade ketchup and Mom's homemade mayo, and I especially love homemade frozen yogurt (as in, Mom made the yogurt, I make into a delicious sweet treat.) I'm healthier and happier than I've been in months. SCD rocks!

Where I've Been All This Time *or* Finally a Diagnosis!!!

After many months of extended online absense, I return. Here is the full story on why this Sunny Pup, who LOVES blogging and all-things-online, disappeared. It's long, so please bear with me and read it when you have a chance to get through the whole thing.

As you may have guessed from glacing at this blog, over the past five years I've been spending a lot of my spare time researching healthy diet in order to lose weight and gain energy. This need to educate myself arose out of a steady decline in energy -- so slow that I did not realize it was happening until I recognized that my normal state of being had been reduced to constant fatigue, weakness, and IBS. I lost strength and energy so slowly that I didn't realize it was happening. I thought I was being lazy and have been really hard on myself, but if I could get my weight and dietary health right (I thought), then I'd have the wherewithal to be more involved and get more done.

I thought right, but unfortunately the source of my problems constantly escaped me. As a result I have learned SO MUCH and tried so many different diets (none of them fads or dangerous - all based in research and alternative health) -- and sometimes I'd lose a significant amount of weight. Then, with no rhyme or reason, the diet would stop working and I'd gain it all back. My partner, The E.P., has been baffled for years - how could I be eating the same foods he was and yet be so much larger? And, especially over the last year, I grew weaker and weaker despite eating organic foods and exercising. It's a frustrating conundrum.

A couple months ago, just when I was becoming despondant in thinking that NOTHING would ever work and trying was pointless, Mom and I got an e-mail from one of my sisters. She wanted to let us know that she'd been diagnosed with celiac disease, and since it's hereditary, thought we should know.

Celiac disease is better known as gluten intolerance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat and wheat products (the protein that binds wheat together). When celiacs ingest gluten, it damages the microvilli in the intestines in such a way that nutrient absorption is severely impaired. Left undiagnosed, it can lead to a multitude of problems including (*=I have): thyroid issues, diabetes, miscarriages due to blighted ovum*, weakness*, fibromyalgia* (unexplained aches and pains), joint stiffness*, IBS*, an inability to gain weight, and an inability to lose weight*, among many others. Both weight maintenance issues are manifestations of malnutrition. Skinny celiacs eat and eat and eat and never gain. In my case, my body thinks I'm starving to death, and so every extra molecule I eat is stored as fat. No diet will work for an extended period of time if it contains any gluten -- which is pretty much every diet out there failed for me, no matter how organic or whole-grainy!!

Not everyone who has the gene gets celiac disease. Something must trigger it. It became obvious that my mom is a lifelong sufferer, never diagnosed. Looking back at her medical record now, we think she was 4 when it was triggered. Between ages 4 and 5 she didn't gain a pound and she spent much of her childhood in the hospital. She did not gain excessive weight until she came down with Hashimoto's disease, a form of hypothyroidism strongly linked to celiac disease. It's obvious to me now that the trigger for me was a course of strong antibiotics I took in 2002. At the time, it ravaged my gut, and I was limited to eating white rice and toast for 6 months on Doctor's orders. I had gotten pretty thin by then, but started gaining it back for no apparent reason.

I never felt that I fully recovered, but I had no idea how bad the damage was. Having a answer, finally, to what the hell's been happening to me, has been a truly freeing and hopeful experience! I've determined that as I slowly grew weaker and weaker, I redirected my available evergy to the two places I had to be functional: my work, and my family. For the last year and a half or so, work has had to come first, because money is a necessity. Thank God I am only working part time -- by 2008 I could no longer hold a full time job. I work, I come home and rest for the next time I work. The E.P. has had to take on more and more responsibility, and neither of us understood why this was happening. I felt awful for becoming withdrawn, but now I see that I simply did not have the energy to keep up with my friends and go out. Aside from the joy of getting a house, it's been a dark time for me.

Mom and I are doing more than going gluten-free, and so far, the results are amazing!!! We have been on a diet for intestinal health (the Specific Carbohydrate Diet) for the last 4 weeks (Mom for a couple weeks longer). We will be on this diet for at least a year, to give our digestive systems time to heal. The premise of the diet is to eliminate carbohydrates that have more than one sugar molecule in their molecular structure (i.e. all di- and poly-saccarides). We eat plenty of healthy carbs, but they come from honey, fruit, veggies, lentils, and nuts instead of grains, starch, lactose and sugar. A lot of chemicals are also eliminated due to their cellular structures. Monosaccharides can be directly digested by damaged systems, whereas other sugars connot be broken down by injured guts. This not only causes more damage but leads to bacterial overgrowth in the body, since bad bacteria feeds on sugar molecules that the body cannot.

I have done more during these last three weekends than I have in the last two months!!! My system is starting to right itself. Mom has already lost a fast 28 pounds. Both of us have a lot more energy, although there's a long road ahead. I feel like I've got my life back -- yet I still have to take it easy and make sure I don't accidentally burn out. But I'm still accomplishing far more than I have been, and I feel that I can start getting back on track with my friends and relationships!!!

And it also means I'll be able to start blogging regularly again. Woot! Blogosphere, How Sorely I Have Missed Thee!

Updates coming somewhat soon

I've been offline for various reasons, and itch to get back, catch up on health news, and update this site - but it may be next Tuesday before I get a chance, as I'm headed out of town this weekend. Then I'll be starting a regular online-update schedule, to keep myself (and possibly you, dear reader) better informed.

In the meantime, my total health is improving every day! I hope yours is too! Whoo hoo!
