Since we had over a pound of mussels left over, tonight we decided to try a different recipe. In March we visited Toronto, and had an incredible meal of Belgian-beer steamed mussels at a quaint, wonderful little bistro called The Fat Belgian. (See the table on the right with the blue/green in the background? That's where we sat!) In honor of one of the best meals (in retrospect) that I have ever had, I looked up online an easy recipe for steaming mussels in Belgian Beer (which really calls for Ale). We used Blue Moon.
This recipe (see link above) is cheaper, easier, faster, and is more delicate to the mussels. My partner covered it when he said, "These are more like restaurant mussels." However, to give The Fat Belgian it's due -- this was by far not the best meal I've ever eaten! But it was still pretty darn good.
The Cioppino is a heartier meal and definitely Italian, but if you're looking for a quick, inexpensive mussel fix reminiscent of the beach or a favorite dining experience, mussels in Belgian beer may be it!
