A Green Living Challenge and Certification program for 2007 is underway, and being hosted by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, and the Arlington Initiative to Reduce Emissions. Both links reference the Green Living Challenge.
The Challenge awards residents - both families and individuals - with points for the actions they are taking, and those they will take on in 2007, that help save energy and reduce emissions into our environment. There is also a neighborhood challenge component, in which whole nieghborhoods compete for recognition and prizes for reducing the most emissions in 2007. Points are awarded for actions such as recycling, replacing light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs, using a push mower instead of a gas mower, joining car sharing programs like ZipCar, commuting to work, reusing rain water, and even joining the Direct Mail Marketing Association's Preference Service to reduce the amount of junk mail sent to your home.
I think this would be fun to do! Arlington even has online resources to purchasing renewable energy credits - which are actually a whole lot cheaper than I thought. We're all used to talking the talk - perhaps it's time to walk the walk, and get our homes certified Green!
